Kunsthaus Baselland

Basel

2014-2015

Kunsthaus Baselland is understood as an integral part of the Dreispitz development site. By deliberately embedding it into the existing warehouse, its spatial, structural, and atmospheric qualities are utilized, and the history of the site is continued. The design is based on targeted, minimal interventions that create a new identity while ensuring continuity. The conversion is conceived as a contribution to the cultural development of the neighbourhood and as a response to the ongoing urbanization process: existing structures are not replaced but transformed and reinterpreted.

On the ground floor, the museum is divided by a central cut into two areas: the south hall is used for exhibitions, the north hall for workshops and deliveries. Between them, the Kunstgarten is established, publicly accessible and offering views to both sides. It connects the museum to the Freilagerplatz and can be used as a sculpture garden, café, or event space. Flexible 8×5 m layout-grids, movable walls, and a ceiling height of 6.6 m allow for versatile exhibition spaces.
