Doubling and preserving character
The Fadmatt housing estate in Urdorf (ZH), which dates back to the 1980s, is being doubled in size without demolishing the existing buildings. A further 183 flats will be added to the current 138.
With its striking orange fibre cement shingle façade, the Fadmatt estate is a landmark of the municipality of Urdorf. One of the main aims of the project is to preserve the familiar character of the estate despite structural densification. The design builds on the existing structure, respects the architectural language and gently develops it further. In this way, a new, contemporary expression emerges from the established order.
Securing retention and strengthening the community
All tenants will be able to remain in the estate. With the exception of three terraced single-family homes, which will make way for a new building, all buildings will be retained. Individual solutions are being sought for those affected. Thanks to the phased construction, temporary relocations or a change to a flat suitable for older people or families are possible. At the same time, the neighbourhood will become more diverse: new residential courtyards and upgraded communal spaces will create places for encounters, flexible uses and active interaction. Open space offers are developed together with the tenants and promote neighbourly coexistence.
New habitats and more biodiversity
The generous outdoor spaces and green areas will continue to be a key quality feature of the development in the future - they are not only used for recreation and play, but also as a habitat for insects and small animals. In order to preserve as much open space as possible, a large proportion of the new living space will be created by adding storeys. The new buildings will be positioned in such a way that green niches, play areas and a central meadow will remain. Additional trees, dry meadows and unsealed ground promote biodiversity and improve the microclimate.
