Sports Complex Facility Seoul

Seoul

2026

The project for the “Sports Complex Seoul” understands architecture as a continuous landscape relationship between river, vegetation, and sky. By dissolving boundaries, it creates a public infrastructure that connects city and nature and enhances the quality of life in Seoul.
The multifunctional sports complex in the Gwangnaru area is part of an open urban park for the entire population. Beyond conventional sports infrastructure, it forms a public space that connects nature and city, everyday life and events, as well as diverse user groups. The currently isolated site between the Han River and the city is re-integrated into the urban context and reinterpreted as a continuous park system.
The ground floor level extends the park landscape and establishes direct relationships between city and river. Spatial sequences with views toward the Han River, inspired by traditional Korean pavilions, structure the experience. A sunken arena integrates the stadium into the topography and reduces both visual and physical barriers. Transparent ground-floor zones allow sport and city to merge.
The program combines international sports standards with public leisure and cultural uses; separated access routes for athletes and spectators ensure functionality, while strategic overlaps generate openness.
The structural system is conceived as a hybrid of reinforced concrete and an overarching timber roof structure. The structure is intentionally legible, reduced, and precisely articulated. The timber conveys material presence and the temporal transformation of nature, enhancing atmospheric quality within the urban-industrial context.
